O Produtor, tasting note published in June 25th 2022

This Port is still a deep crimson colour, with lighter tones around the rim, indicative of the natural evolution in bottle, but it is still incredibly young. The nose is dominated by blackberry jam and floral notes. On the palate, black fruits give way to firm tannins and herbaceous notes. Very persistent finish.

Quinta do Vale Meão

In 1877, D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, already the owner of the Douro’s largest agricultural estate, bought 300 hectares of virgin land from the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa at public auction. Her dream was to build a model farm from scratch, applying the vast experience she had accumulated throughout her life as a businesswoman in the Douro. Her pioneering spirit in the Upper Douro stemmed from the conviction that it was possible to produce Port wine of excellent quality. The grapes from the Quinta were the basis for some of the finest Port wines shipped from Gaia. Today, the Quinta is still owned by his descendants, who have devoted the last two decades to selecting batches of Port wine with a view to launching aged Tawnies. To this end, they have equipped one of the two cellars built by their ancestor with vats, casks and barrels for ageing these Port wines, which come exclusively from the estate’s vineyards. It is with justifiable pride that the fifth and sixth generations have carried on the family tradition, patiently waiting for the right moment to present these wines to the world.

Quinta do Vale Meão has been producing Single Quinta Ports on a regular basis since 2000. In 2001, we decided to produce a second batch with the aim of ageing it in bottle in our cellar and bringing it to market at full maturity.

Quinta do Vale Meão

In 1877, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, owner of the largest winemaking estate in the Douro, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction from the Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality. Her dream was to create a model vineyard from nothing, using for this the vast experience she had acquired throughout a lifetime as a Douro landowner. This ambitious project took eight years to complete, from 1887 to 1895. Sadly, this grand lady’s pleasure in her last and most significant enterprise was of short duration as she died in 1896.

Since then, the estate always remained in the hands of her descendants. In the 1970s, her great-great-great-grandson, Francisco Javier de Olazabal became responsible for its management and he began the long and laborious process of acquiring the shares that belonged to his kin and to other co-owners of the property. In 1994, he and his children became the sole owners of the Quinta. Until then, the grapes from the estate were sold to A.A. Ferreira S.A., the company established by Dona Antónia’s descendants, where they formed the basis of some its finest wines. This connection continued until 1998 when Francisco Javier de Olazabal resigned as Managing Director of A.A. Ferreira S.A. to dedicate himself, together with his oenologist son Francisco de Olazabal y Nicolau de Almeida, to producing, ageing and marketing the wines from the Quinta through a new company, F. Olazabal & Filhos Lda.
