O Produtor, tasting note published in June 16th 2021

A small plot with free-standing vines, in the heart of the vineyard of Quinta do Noval, untouched by phylloxera. The word 'National' refers to the fact that these vines are Portuguese vines growing in Portuguese soil, without American rootstock, and therefore directly 'rooted in the soil of the nation'. This great wine is a source of pride for all Portuguese and at its best is the highest expression of Quinta do Noval's extraordinary terroir. National Vintage is a unique and extraordinary phenomenon. It does not necessarily follow the same pace as the rest of Quinta do Noval. There are years when a great Nacional is produced without Noval declaring a Quinta do Noval Vintage. There are other years when Quinta do Noval declares a great Vintage but does not declare a Nacional. And then there are years, in which both the Nacional vineyard and the other vineyards of the Quinta produce extraordinary but totally distinct Vintage Ports.

Quinta do Noval

The grapes were placed in a small traditional lagar in the Quinta and foot treading was carried out by a group of 6 men for 3 hours. Fermentation took place under controlled temperatures between 25º and 28ºC. The Vintage Nacional was aged for 18 months in old casks before bottling in the air-conditioned warehouses of the Quinta in the Douro Valley Demarcated Region.

Quinta do Noval

The property, with 145 hectares dominating the Pinhão Valley, is the soul and essence of Quinta do Noval. The soil is essentially composed of schist rock, making all vineyard work particularly difficult. Quinta do Noval replanted, since 1994, 100 hectares of vineyard with the noblest grape varieties of the Douro region, adapting pruning methods to the typology of the plots. The plots were replanted in batches of a single variety, each one chosen according to the characteristics of each parcel of land: altitude, sun exposure, and vine planting type.

Today, plots planted with mixed grape varieties are progressively disappearing from the Douro Valley. Noval was a pioneer in this trend, being the first to replant vineyards while conserving intact the magnificent traditional terraces with their walls of schist stone.

Quinta do Noval is the only historic Port wine shipper to bear the name of its estate. The identity of Quinta do Noval is rooted in its terroir.

The consistency of style of Quinta do Noval’s Vintage Ports over the decades is one of the particularities of Quinta do Noval in the world of Port. Consistency simply because all Vintage Ports come from a single vineyard, a magical place.

The place is so beautiful, so remarkable, that the idea of being part of something greater than us, that existed before us, and will exist after us, is always present. The notion of continuity is fundamental: our obligation to the past, our responsibility in the present for the vineyard and its wines, and our obligations to future generations who will tend the vineyard and produce wine as we do today.
