Niepoort
Talking about Northern Portuguese wines and not mentioning the Niepoort family is almost impossible. This family of Dutch origin has lived on the banks of the Douro for over 170 years, it was in 1842 that the first Niepoort arrived in Portugal. But it took to reach the fifth generation for Dirk Niepoort to have tasted Port Wine closer to perfection. This is the 2017 Vintage, a nectar where balance, harmony, concentration, tannin quality and freshness are the main characteristics. The year 2017 was unusually, hot, with reduced rainfall, but the harvest did not have temperatures as high as usual, and the cold nights helped the whole process, recalls Dirk Niepoort. These factors are, therefore, the basis for the wine that the producer considers to be the closest to perfection he has ever tasted, created from old vines, aged between 60 and 100 years, in Cima Corgo, one of the demarcated sub-regions of the Douro.
As Dirk Niepoort explains, this 2017 Vintage was made with grapes from co-planted vines, foot trodden in granite lagares, with 100% stems. The wine was then left to age in barrels in the Douro over the winter and was then moved to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2018.
