O Produtor, tasting note published in July 27th 2024

The color is concentrated with a ruby hue and violet tinges. On the nose, black chocolate notes stand out, complemented by aromas of wild fruits, fresh figs, violet, and spices. On the palate, it is structured, firm, and with an acidity that sets it apart from other houses. It starts sweet and finishes almost dry, long, fresh, and spicy. This Port is an excellent option to open and drink now, but it could also benefit from cellaring for a few decades as it is bottled with a cylindrical cork.

Niepoort

It is perhaps the most authentic of Niepoort’s Ports. Dirk Niepoort refers to LBV as the “younger sibling” of Vintage, as the origin of the grapes and vinification methods are similar. Like Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage is made from a selection of full-bodied and high-quality red Ports from a single year. The grapes for LBV come from low-yielding vineyards in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro Valley.

The wine matures in large oak casks and barrels, and it is Niepoort’s tradition to bottle LBV four years after the harvest. According to Dirk, it is better to “bottle this Port as soon as possible so that the freshness and fruit of the LBV are revealed at the tasting moment.”

The aging process to which LBV is subjected allows it to present itself matured and rounded, making it suitable for consumption young, right after bottling.

To fully appreciate its qualities, decanting before serving is recommended.

Excellent when paired with buttery cheeses, mild blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts, or a peppery steak.

Niepoort Vinhos

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão).
