O Produtor, tasting note published in February 20th 2020

A marked appearance with a dark purple hue, featuring aromas of black currants and sweet dark cherries, spices, and subtle floral notes of violets. Very firm on the initial palate, with superb acidic freshness and prominent dark fruits in the mid-palate, accompanied by fine, granular tannins, giving it a long, silky, and dry alcoholic finish. This is a Port wine suitable for aging in cellars for an extended period.

Niepoort

A special edition limited to 100 units, with identity, image, and production signed by Omdesign, fully inspired by Dirk Niepoort, one of the most iconic and charismatic ambassadors of Port Wine.

The box, made of oak wood with screen-printed elements, “Rolf & The Collectors,” resembles an old toolbox. Inside, there is a bottle, four hand-painted tiles that together reveal the famous phrase: “You can, if you want!”, commonly used by Dirk, and the back of the cork is designed to also be used as coasters. It also includes a brochure that invites you to explore the essence of this project. Specially designed and created for this packaging, there is also an exclusive wooden board with a green leather handle and a numbered knife, embodying the concept of this “Vintage with a knife between the teeth.”

The key chosen by Dirk to open the box of this edition pays homage and recalls his father, Rolf, an inveterate collector of various objects, including keys, like the one replicated in this edition.

The numbered label is a unique and innovative piece, embracing the original screen-printed bottle of Niepoort Bioma Vintage Vinha da Pisca 2017. Inside, there is a small comic strip illustrating Dirk and his father’s key corridor, which can be detached and used, for example, as a postcard. Each label has a irreverent image, enhanced by modeled relief and stamping foil, and is applied manually with resin medals in homage to the six generations of the Niepoort family, inspired by the founder’s symbol, the basis of the Niepoort logo.

And inside, an excellent Vintage Port that not only respects the terroir but also takes us back to the golden age of Port wine. At the heart of the Bioma Vintage “Vinha da Pisca” concept is a very special vineyard in a unique location in the Douro region.

What we aim to offer, with small productions, is an old way of vinifying a Vintage, similar to the Vintage Ports of 1970 and earlier, bottled in England. The exceptional quality of the grapes from the old vines of Vinha da Pisca seems to express their sense of “place” magnificently when applying the “logic” of bygone times.

Vinification: The year 2017 will be remembered for intense heat and historically low precipitation levels, but the harvest, at the perfect moment of ripeness, allowed the grapes to be received in ideal conditions with fantastic natural acidity.

All grape clusters from the Bioma Vintage were foot-trodden at our Port Wine vinification center in Vale de Mendiz. After fortification with grape spirits, the Port wine stabilized during the winter. In spring, the wine was transferred to a cool part of the cellar at Quinta de Nápoles and placed in pipes (traditional 550-liter casks). By aging this Port in pipes in a cool cellar in the Douro region instead of large vats in Gaia and bottling the Bioma “Vinha da Pisca” in the third year after harvest, we managed to produce an exceptionally complex wine. Interestingly, this is how it was done in the “good old days” when wines were shipped in pipes to England and bottled later.

Niepoort Vinhos

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão).
