Kopke
C.N. Kopke is the oldest Port wine company. It was founded in 1638 by Cristiano Kopke and his son, Nicolau Kopke, who came to Portugal as a consul of the Hanseatic League.
With four centuries of success in the world of Port wines, the Kopke brand, acquired in 2006 by the Sogevinus group, is today a prestigious reference, maintaining the quality objectives that have guided it in the market over the years. It is especially recognized for its Colheita Ports, with high notoriety in the sector.
Each wine tells a story. In the case of Colheita Kopke, this story is unique. Tasting a wine is tasting history, and in the case of this Colheita, it recalls significant events such as the release of the seventh album by the English rock group The Beatles – Revolver, which is on the list of the 200 definitive albums in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the same year, the 25 de Abril Bridge, a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon to the south of the country, was inaugurated.
Vinification: Hand-picked at their optimal point, the grapes are destemmed, crushed, and vinified through a careful maceration process to extract color, tannins, and aromas from the skins, complemented by frequent pump-overs during fermentation. This takes place in lagares at a controlled temperature between 28-30ºC until the desired Baumé degree is reached. At this stage, grape brandy is added (benefit), resulting in a fortified wine. This high-quality wine comes from a single harvest and ages in wood for varying periods, never less than 7 years, before being bottled according to market demands.
Slightly chilled, Kopke 1966 Port expresses all its finesse and sophistication when paired with desserts based on caramel, dried fruits, and spices, such as caramel fondant with apple and ginger jelly, tarte tatin, crème brûlée, and medium intensity cheeses.
