Late Bottle Vintage was originally a wine intended for bottling as Vintage Port, but due to lack of demand it was kept in a large wooden barrel for longer than planned. Late bottled vintage is aged in barrel for a minimum of four and a maximum of six years after harvest. Due to this long ageing in wood, LBV’s are less astringent and full-bodied than Vintage ports. Considered by many to be the best quality / price ratio, LBV’s have the advantage of being ready to drink without decanting. Usually ready to drink when released on the market, LBV ports are the result of a one-year harvest and tend to be smoother and lighter than a Vintage Port.
