WINE BOX REGIONS

The Beira Interior is the highest wine region in Portugal. Surrounded by majestic mountains, the vineyards flourish between 350 and 750 meters above sea level. Beira Interior wine is the true Portuguese mountain wine: unique, long-lived, and elegant.

But what is the impact of altitude on the quality and profile of the wines?

In a climate of cold, harsh winters and hot, dry summers, altitude plays a crucial role in the ripening of the grapes, mitigating the heat shocks. As we ascend, the atmosphere becomes less dense and atmospheric pressure decreases, resulting in less heat retention. For every 100 meters above sea level, the temperature drops by about 0.65ºC.

Additionally, the lower atmospheric density increases the thermal amplitude between day and night. Cool summer nights are a treasure for winemakers, providing a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, preserving their natural acidity, and resulting in balanced, fresh, flavorful wines with remarkable gastronomic aptitude.

The soul of the wine lies in the unique combination of the Síria and Fonte Cal grape varieties, from vines planted exclusively on granitic soils with quartz veins, in the Douro River basin at an average altitude of 725 meters.
