Horácio Simões
The Moscatel Roxo is a dessert wine produced in the Setúbal region, which has been demarcated since 1907. The Casa Agrícola Horácio Simões, founded in 1910, has always focused on innovative products. It was in this house that the decision was made to revive a grape variety that had almost disappeared from the region, giving birth to this exceptional nectar.
The dedicated work between the vineyard and the winery was essential to ensure the quality of this wine. In the vineyard, each plant was carefully monitored to keep yields below 2,500 liters/ha, ensuring that the grapes reached the winery in optimal sanitary and ripeness conditions.
At the winery, a specific vinification process was developed for this Moscatel Roxo, distinct from the usual practices in the region. The process includes a rigorous bunch selection, followed by a 5-day pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation begins slowly, and after three days, when it reaches about ¾ of the process, the wine is fortified with the finest wine spirits, in this case, Armagnac. This is followed by a prolonged post-fermentation maceration of 5 months.
The final aging process takes place in 6,000-liter barrels, where the wine gains even more concentration and complexity, resulting in a truly unique Moscatel Roxo.
