Horácio Simões

Moscatel Roxo is a dessert wine produced in the Setúbal region, demarcated since 1907. Casa Agrícola Horácio Simões, founded in 1910, has always focused on innovative products. In this case, the focus was on a grape variety that had become extinct in the region to produce this nectar.

Moscatel Roxo Heritage results from intense work divided between the vineyard and the winery. The vineyard was closely monitored and cared for throughout the entire time to ensure yields did not exceed 2500 liters/ha and that the grapes reached the winery in optimal sanitary and maturation conditions. In the winery, a unique vinification process was designed for this product, distinct from what was usual in other companies in the region. It involves an intense selection of bunches followed by a pre-fermentation maceration for 5 days, after which fermentation begins very slowly and evenly throughout the vat, reaching ¾ of the fermentation in 3 days. This wine is then fortified with the best wine brandies, in this case, Armagnac, followed by a post-fermentation maceration for a long 5 months. The final aging is carried out in a 6000-liter barrel, where it concentrates.

Casa Agricola Horácio Simões

The centuries-old Casa Agrícola Horácio Simões is not the largest producer in the Setúbal Peninsula, but it is certainly one of the oldest and most reputable in the region. It is here in perfect balance a traditional and almost handmade approach of the ancestors and a thirst of the contemporary generation to try new things.
The winery at Quinta do Anjo is small and disguised as a villa with a shop and coffee shop, where locals like to stay in the shade in the patio for an afternoon drink. When passing in the street you don’t even notice the winery, especially if the gate is closed.
The house has about 40 hectares of own vineyard and has another 30 hectares of partners’ vineyard, besides some grapes bought in the region. The annual production is about 300 thousand litres of still wines, Moscatel de Setúbal and Moscatel Roxo.
