O Produtor, tasting note published in August 13th 2015

A well-balanced, elegant, and high-quality sweet wine. In the mouth, it presents good concentration of crystallized fruits, black Monukka raisins, caramel, and molasses with good acidity. It represents well the characteristics of this grape variety.

Henriques & Henriques

The Tinta Negra grape was considered for centuries to be a lower-quality grape variety.

Finally, in 2015, much to the satisfaction of many producers, it was elevated to the same category as the so-called “noble varieties”.

To mark the occasion, Henriques & Henriques launched the Tinta Negra 50 years wine, baptizing it “The Belle of the Ball”. In that same year, it won the “Best of the Year” award at the Essência do Vinho event – Porto.

Henriques & Henriques

The history dates back to the year 1850 when the company was founded by João Gonçalves Henriques, a descendant of a family that had settled in Câmara de Lobos many years before. After his death in 1912, with his sons João Joaquim and Francisco Eduardo Henriques, the name “Henriques & Henriques” was born. The Henriques family, through different generations, played an important role in the production of Madeira wine, always standing out as a producer of excellent quality wines. The last of the Henriques passed away in 1968, with the company then passing to its closest collaborators and friends.

In addition to being a producer and exporter, it is also the only company with its own vineyards, resulting in the production of grapes of extreme quality, notably from the Verdelho and Terrantez varieties, allowing it to control production from cultivation to harvest. On the other hand, it also purchases grapes from various viticulturists with whom it maintains close long-term relationships.

In 1992, Henriques & Henriques invested in the construction of a new aging cellar in the parish of Câmara de Lobos, where the headquarters and commercial space are also located, and built a vinification center on its property located in the parish of Quinta Grande, providing the company with the adequate means to meet market demands using the latest technological innovations, while maintaining the family tradition of nearly 200 years in the production of the finest Madeira wines.
