O Produtor, tasting note published in August 15th 2022

With a light amber tone, this wine presents aromas of figs, sultanas, dark chocolate, clove, English cake and toasted almonds. With a beautiful freshness and balanced acidity in the mouth, we feel a touch of bittersweet, spicy and slightly dry with an elegant finish. an elegant finish.

Barbeito

The Malvasia Candida was one of the first grape varieties introduced in Madeira. In the year 1455 the Venetian navigator Alvise de Cadamosto, carried out his first voyage in the service of Prince Henry the Navigator. During his passage through the island he described the variety among the many vineyards he observed in Madeira. According to his reports, “wines were already being produced, very, very good wines, if one considers that the island has only been inhabited for a short time. There are so many of them, that they are enough for those of the island and many of them are exported”. Faia dos Padres is the only area where we can still find vines of Malvasia Candida. The Jesuit priests found in the area of this fajã the ideal place to grow vines of this type. A privileged place, unique even, where the land reaches the sea, hidden by a cliff almost 500m high, which remains to this day.

Vinhos Barbeito

In the early years our company concentrated its efforts in the production of bottled wine. New concepts of marketing in the Madeira wine business were introduced as well as innovative packaging like the wickered flagon. The quality of our wines gained an excellent reputation among consumers which helped to strenghten Barbeito’s image in the international market. In 1991 another important change occurred in our company: for first time someone from our family became responsible for the making of the wine. In 1993, after two years learning the “secrets” of our wines’ style and character as well as studying modern techniques of wine making, Ricardo Freitas faced alone his first grape harvest. Thinking of the future, we began building a working team in which all members work under the same motto: produce good quality wines with a unique style.

Since then Vinhos Barbeito never stopped investing in the purchase of good quality grapes to make fine wines. To achieve that goal, year after year, we work to establish closer relationships with farmers.
