O Produtor, tasting note published in November 18th 2022

Dark greenish colour, this 50 year old presents an open and intense bouquet, with aromas of mahogany wood, cocoa
iodine, coffee, clove, tobacco, sultanas, molasses and nutshell. Voluminous in the mouth, one can feel the sweetness mixed with a
acidity. It has a smoky finish with a rustic and complex character.

Barbeito

This wine, part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of Vinhos Barbeito, is both a tribute to Manuela Vasconcelos and to artisanal knowledge. Mother, businesswoman, an inescapable figure in Madeiran and Portuguese society, a woman ahead of her time, gifted with a free spirit and a remarkable sense of humour that accompanied her easy smile. She drove her father’s company forward and taught her son Ricardo the art of making Madeira Wine. A master at creating blends of old wines kept in demijohns, Ricardo Diogo created this 50 year old from this knowledge, with his unique touch and his son António Freitas (to_nd) illustrated the label. The entire process of making this wine, the bottling and labelling are the result of a profound work of fine craftsmanship to obtain this very limited and rare edition.

Vinhos Barbeito

In the early years our company concentrated its efforts in the production of bottled wine. New concepts of marketing in the Madeira wine business were introduced as well as innovative packaging like the wickered flagon. The quality of our wines gained an excellent reputation among consumers which helped to strenghten Barbeito’s image in the international market. In 1991 another important change occurred in our company: for first time someone from our family became responsible for the making of the wine. In 1993, after two years learning the “secrets” of our wines’ style and character as well as studying modern techniques of wine making, Ricardo Freitas faced alone his first grape harvest. Thinking of the future, we began building a working team in which all members work under the same motto: produce good quality wines with a unique style.

Since then Vinhos Barbeito never stopped investing in the purchase of good quality grapes to make fine wines. To achieve that goal, year after year, we work to establish closer relationships with farmers.
