Vinous, tasting note published in February 23rd 2022

Tasting the 2019, I noticed it has a slightly paler hue compared to recent vintages (although I've never read much about the colour of young Sauternes.) It definitely has a highly aromatic bouquet that is seductive in purity, seductive aromas of honeysuckle and saffron, soon joined by chamomile, white flowers and orange blossom. It has wonderful delineation and gains intensity with aeration. The palate is supremely well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious and armed with just the right amount of viscosity, this Yquem is surprisingly understated at first but gains presence, offering irresistible flavours of layers of honey, lemongrass, lemon thyme and orange pith. Yquem is so tempting in its youth, but I feel this vintage will reward those with good cellar sense for at least a decade.

Château D'Yquem

Considered the greatest white wine in the world, Château d’Yquem wine comes from a small hillside that benefits from an exceptional microclimate and terroir. The vineyard, which comprises no fewer than 150 plots of different soils, is pampered all year round: each vine receives an average of 50 treatments a year. Selection is particularly rigorous in Yquem: a vine is often said to produce only one glass of wine. Grapes are picked in a minimum of four passages (seven in 1997!) in order to harvest the perfectly ripe grapes affected by noble rot.
The estate also produces a dry white wine, Y d’Yquem, from grapes unaffected by botrytis cinerea.
In some years, the entire vintage is downgraded (no Yquem was produced in 1910, 1915, 1930, 1951, 1952, 1964, 1972, 1974, 1992 and 2012). The wine is aged for up to 42 months in new barrels.
The hot and dry conditions of February and March precede a very wet and cool period at the beginning of the vegetative phase. Although the milder weather at the beginning of June favoured rapid flowering, the heat wave set in at the end of the month and lasted until almost 15 August. These high temperatures ensured the rapid development of the vines, thus compensating for the slight delay recorded at the beginning of the cycle. On 26 July, a rainy episode of rare intensity allowed the replenishment of the soil’s water reserves. The warm, dry weather until harvest was ideal for refining the perfect ripeness of the grapes. The harvest of this 2019 Château d’Yquem began on 10 October, benefiting from favourable conditions for five days. The harvest gave rise to an exceptional vintage combining fruity expression, freshness and concentration.

Château D'Yquem

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe. It offers a myriad of well-balanced and complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that is left is reminiscent of a quote by Frédéric Dard “the silence that follows a Mozart piece, in which the listener remains suffused with music”. This reflects the fact that Château d’Yquem remains on the palate for a remarkably long time, providing a unique and prolonged pleasure. There is a charming expression in French to describe the tremendous prolonged taste of Yquem: il fait la queue du paon, which means it spreads like a peacock’s tail.
