O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2017
Cristal is a remarkably balanced and refined champagne whose length is inimitable. It has a silky texture and fruity aromas, complemented by a powerful mineral quality with white fruit and citrus notes. Cristal is a wine that keeps well: it can be conserved for over twenty years without losing its freshness and character.
Louis Roederer Cristal is our House’s most famous wine which was created in 1876 to satisfy the demanding tastes of Tsar Alexander II. The emperor asked Louis Roederer to reserve the House’s best cuvée for him every year. He was particularly fond of the House’s wine. To distinguish this cuvée, this exceptional champagne came in a transparent lead-crystal bottle. The new brand was named after this precious material, which is particularly transparent and luminous. Produced uniquely during the best years, when the Chardonnay and Pinot noir grapes have attained perfect maturity, Cristal is aged for 6 years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further 8 months after dégorgement.

Louis Roederer
Founded in 1776, the maison Louis Roederer is arguably a serious case of longevity and excellence. In 1833, it was inherited by Louis Roederer, who in addition to giving her his name, donated all his will making this house an exception among the great brands of Champagne. With an enterprising and visionary spirit, Louis Roederer took care personally of the cultivation of the grapes, since he knew that a great wine depends, above all, on the quality of the raw material. So it took a controversial attitude at the time: to buy own vineyards in Grand Cru areas of Champagne, distinguishing itself forever in a region where 90% of the vineyards belong to small farmers who sell their production to the big brands. Currently the maison Louis Roederer has 240 hectares of vineyards distributed in 410 plots in Grands zones and Crus Premiers. They are in three classic districts of Champagne: Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallee de la Marne. This allows 70% of Louis Roederer’s wines to be made with their own grapes from strict quality criteria.
