Now that is Spring time, we are starting to think in summer and in those calories we need to loose, right?
I guess that all winelovers are also starting to ask themselves if wine makes them fat or not. So, the answer is: yes, it does. Just like every alcoholic drink. It is almost common sense that (almost) everything in live makes us fat, right?
But do not be sad. There is a positive perspective. From all alcoholic beverages, wine is one of the those with less calories – when consumed moderately of course.
When we compare a glass of beer with a glass of wine, wine is more caloric, because it has a higher alcoholic content. on the other hand, if we compare a shot of wine with a shot of whisky or Gin, it is much less caloric.
Moreover, wine is the beverage that provokes less abdominal fat. So the odds of getting a “beer belly” are low. Actually, what makes us fat in wine is the residual sugar, i.e., the sugar which is not transformed in alcohol during fermentation.
The sweet wines, like Port, Muscat, Late harvests and Sparkling are more sweet, so they are more likely to make you a bit fatter.
Some sweet grapes
Wines made from Riesling, Alvarinho, Merlot, Castelão, Jaen, Loureiro or Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, produce more sugar so generally they will be more alcoholic.
But, you know what they say: what doesn’t kill you, makes you fat!
Cheers!!
