To explain a sensation is not an easy job. Here we try to be as simple as possible.
When talking about a wine’s body we are referring to the different density sensations it shows. I mean, the body a wine presents in the mouth.
A wine’s body is directly related to its alcoholic content, the techniques used during vinification, etc. The more correct the relation between these factors, the more balanced (elegant) the wine will be.
As an example to help you understand, imagine the body perception of a glass of water, a glass of natural fruit juice, a soda or a glass of milk. Which has more presence in the mouth?
Some characteristics on the palate
Watery – It is light, with little flavor, low alcohol content and low acidity. It decreases the tasting experience – like a “glass of water”.
Light – Wine with a delicate structure, with soft tannins, low to medium alcohol content and balanced acidity. With the light density of a soda.
Elegant – Good density, without being full-bodied, like a natural fruit juice. Generally are the most versatile in terms of pairing with food.
Complex – Wine with multiple aromas and flavors mainly due to its aging.
Full-bodied – More dense wine, sometimes even viscous and concentrated, with more tannins and more flavor on the palate. Like a “glass of milk”
Heavy – Wine excessively dense and not balanced.
To understand all the differences, nothing better than practice.
Gather some friends and taste some wines,
Cheers!
