Pick your kind of wine
You don’t need a special degree to taste and enjoy them. But to really understand the great diversity of sensations these wines may transmit, one must make use of vision, smell and taste with some dedication, adding to it a bit of knowledge about the wine’s history, origin and character.
In older wines we find animal aromas (v.g. leather). In reds, flowers may dominate, like rose, violet, or redjruits.
In younger wines, flowers and fresh fruits are expected – these will likely evolve over the years turning into mature, dry fruit aromas.
Douro, Dão and Alentejo have some fine examples of complex reds.
