Marufo
The Marufo grape variety, also known as Mourisco-Roxo, holds significant importance in the Douro region, as it is used in the production of Port wine. Nationally, Marufo is cultivated across 2122 hectares, which accounts for 1.0% of the national vineyard area. Within the Douro Demarcated Region, this grape variety covers 1421.2 hectares of vineyards, occupying approximately 2.9% of the region’s vineyard area.
With oenological potential for producing quality red wine, noble aromatic rosé, or sparkling wine, Marufo typically yields wines with a light color, ranging from rosé to ruby, with a fruity flavor, hints of currant, and persistent coffee caramel notes. Historically, it was often blended with the Síria grape variety, and currently with Rufete; it is rarely found as a single varietal wine.
Marufo is classified as a PDO wine in Trás-os-Montes, Douro, Porto, Távora-Varosa, Dão, Beira Interior, and as a PGI wine in Transmontano, Terras de Císter, Terras do Dão, Beira Atlântico, Terras da Beira, Tejo, and Península de Setúbal.
