Thousand advantages of eating fish
Grilled, baked, boiled or fried, fish has great nutricional values. Ideally, it must be consumed more than 3 times a week, boiled or grilled. It’s light and easy to digest and helps preventing cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes. It also has an important role improving concentration and memory.
Normally, it has between 2 to 5% of fat content, which values, when compared to the meat ones, are very low! So, it’s an excellent healthy diet option.
Here are some important informations and curiosities about some of the most consumed fishes in Portugal:
- 100gr of boiled hake have about 112kcal. The same quantity of fried hake have almost twice: 213kcal!
- As sardine, mackerel is one of the omega-3 richest fishes. Omega-3 is a kind of polyunsaturated fat, very important preventing hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
- Sardine is tastier in summer. Its fat composition, which has higher levels this season because there are more food, is the principal reason of its different flavor.
- More than any other fish, sea bass must be spiced with white wine, what provides a very special flavor.
- Portugal is the 3rd country in the world with the highest rate of fish consumption, after Iceland and before Japan. It’s estimated that each people consumes around 57kg / year – more than twice of european average!
