Understanding wine and tasting it

How to taste wine
Smell

So, it looks like wine. That’s good news. Now you need to smell it to get its aromas and character.

Rule-of-thumb: you don’t need to stuck your nose in the glass for 5 minutes, or snif it avidly like a tracking hound.

Just swirl the glass a little, that will help releasing the aromas, and smell it swiftly. It should be immediatly clear if there is any bad aroma coming from the wine, like vinegar, mould, or cork. If you feel any of these, ask for another bottle.

With time and practice, you will learn to tell many aromas in each wine glass you take.
