Every year, the editors of Wine Spectator review wines from the previous 12 months and publish the Top 100, based on quality, value, availability, and the excitement that different wines offer.

In 2023, two Portuguese wines made it to this Top 100. They are the red wine Quinta de La Rosa Reserva 2019, a Douro wine, ranking 13th with 95/100 points, and from the Vinhos Verdes region, the white wine Muralhas de Monção 2022, ranking 41st with 90/100 points.

Red Wine – Quinta de La Rosa Reserve, 2019, Douro:

“This elegant red wine reveals a sense of restraint, with vibrant acidity and tight, sculpted tannins wrapped in a layer of lush texture that carries notes of crushed black currant and pureed boysenberry, violet and wild sage, sandalwood, slate, and smoke. It opens in the glass, expanding the rich profile to reveal details of ground anise and pink peppercorn, eucalyptus, espresso, and toast in a lasting finish.”

White Wine – Muralhas de Monção, 2022, Vinhos Verdes:

“There’s a flinty underpinning to this aromatic white, which shows a succulent range of ripe apricot, blood orange, white blossoms, lemon peel, and pickled ginger. Sleek and linear, with a hint of saline on the finish. Alvarinho and Trajadura. Drink now.”
