Discover Tannat, the healthiest grape in the world, rich in resveratrol, a compound beneficial for health!
Famous for its power, bold tannins, and intense color, Tannat is now cultivated in various parts of the world, with a special highlight on Uruguay, where the grape has gained great recognition.
History: From France to the World
Tannat has roots in the Madiran region in the southwest of France, where it became popular for its strength and resilience. In the late 19th century, it was introduced to Uruguay by Pascual Harriague. Today, Uruguay is the largest producer of Tannat in the world, but the grape has also expanded to other countries, such as Portugal, where it is gaining more and more prominence.
In 2016, the National Wine Institute of Uruguay chose April 14th to celebrate Tannat Day, in honor of Harriague’s legacy and the importance of Tannat to the country’s wine identity.
Power and Elegance in Every Sip
Tannat is known for its dark, intense color and robust structure, which makes it ideal for those who enjoy complex wines with aging potential. The grape is rich in powerful tannins, which provides a unique sensation, with acidity that makes Tannat wines fresh and vibrant.
Main Characteristics:
Aromas: Dark fruits (such as blackberry, cassis), spices like black pepper, tobacco, and herbal notes.
Palate: Intense tannins, robust structure, and balanced acidity, ideal for aging.
Color: Deep red, almost black.
The Healthiest Grape in the World
In addition to being delicious, Tannat wine is considered one of the healthiest wines in the world. Tannat contains 2.7 times more resveratrol than other red wine varieties, a compound with powerful antioxidant properties that help fight cellular aging and improve cardiovascular health. Moreover, Tannat has high levels of polyphenols, which promote healthy blood circulation.
Wines That Evolve with Time
Tannat is a grape that ages wonderfully, developing complexity and sophistication. For high-quality wines, the ideal aging period is 5 to 10 years, which will allow the wine to become more balanced and elegant over time.
How to Pair It?
Tannat pairs well with robust dishes and intense flavors. Some pairing suggestions include:
Grilled and roasted meats: such as beef tenderloin, lamb, or pork ribs.
Game dishes: such as wild boar, venison, or duck.
Aged and cured cheeses: such as blue cheeses and cured sheep’s cheese.
Dishes with strong spices: such as Mediterranean, Indian, or Moroccan cuisine.
