Quinta de Ventozelo
One of the oldest and largest quintas in the Douro.

Quinta de Ventozelo is one of the oldest and largest quintas in the Douro, with about 400 hectares, of which 200 are vineyards. Located on the left bank of the Douro, in the parish of Ervedosa do Douro, municipality of S. João da Pesqueira, the approximately 200 hectares of vineyards extend from the Douro bank, at an altitude of about 130 metres, to the top of the quinta at 500 metres and along the Ribeira de Ervedosa, which allows to have vineyard plots with all the exhibitions at different altitudes.

The challenge is to understand this diversity of soils, microclimates, grape varieties and conduction systems, adapting the best winemaking practices in terms of environment and sustainability, in order to obtain wines with personality and that reflect Ventozelo’s essence.

The combination of these factors with the most adapted grape varieties to each ecosystem, and specific vinification and ageing techniques, results in an enormous diversity of wines, which we believe translate well the essence of each place.

In addition to the 7 monovarietal wines, 10 Douro blend wines of different grape varieties and 2 Port wines are produced.

Brief historical review

The first documentary reference to Ventozelo appears in the enquiries of 1288, in the reign of D. Dinis, pointing it as a village, associated with that of Roriz. However, only in the 16th century, around 1500, by reservation to the monastery of S. Pedro das Águias, the Quinta de Ventozelo came into possession of the noblemen of Casa do Poço, in Lamego, with successive reservation titles from 1680 and 1740 and 1806.

Acquired by Gran Cruz in 2014, the group’s strategy has since then sought to exploit the enormous potential of the property. This involves not only working on the richness and diversity of its wines, but also investing in olive oil, wine tourism and nature tourism.
