Discover Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the Douro. Port and Douro wines full of identity, crafted with tradition and innovation since 1616.
A Story Dating Back to the 17th Century
With deep roots in the heart of the Douro, Quinta da Vacaria is one of the region’s oldest wine estates. Its history officially dates back to 1616, although winemaking on the estate surely predates this. Since then, each generation has upheld a unique legacy, where tradition walks hand in hand with innovation.
In the 18th century, the estate expanded its vineyards and refined viticulture and winemaking techniques—a crucial step in establishing its reputation as a producer of exceptional Port wines. It’s noteworthy that in 1756, the Douro became the world’s first demarcated and regulated wine region.
Some of the Port wines left by earlier generations are now true enological treasures, preserved with reverence. A rare collection that honors history and enriches Quinta da Vacaria’s present.
The Unique Terroir of Baixo Corgo
Situated in the heart of Baixo Corgo, Quinta da Vacaria presents a unique terroir with a complex orographic relief, providing the ideal conditions for the production of superior quality wines. With 42 hectares of vineyards organized in terraces and steps, the estate takes advantage of the schist soil, formed by weathered stones from the degradation of schist, which favors both the vine’s development and its underground health.
The mild climate of the region, coupled with highly permeable soil, allows the roots of the vines to delve deep, seeking nutrients and moisture to produce wines of great complexity and aging potential. The sun-exposed schist slopes of the estate ensure perfect grape maturation, resulting in wines with a remarkable structure.
At Quinta da Vacaria, the commitment to authenticity and sustainability is evident. The vineyards, cultivated according to traditional practices, maintain a balance between heritage and current environmental preservation needs, giving rise to wines with a unique character.
Grape varieties are diverse—Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Roriz, Rabigato, Pinot Noir, Gouveio Real, Chardonnay, Viosinho, Arinto—and each plays an essential role in creating wines that express the richness and diversity of the Douro.
