The tecnique of producing orange wines was born in George, thousands of years ago. Nowadays, they are produced all over the world and became recently known.
Is it made from oranges?
No. It is made from white grapes using the same method as red wines (with skin contact macerations). So, the juices are in touch with the grape’s solid parts during days, weeks or even months.
Unlike the common whites, these wines do not pass through processes of temperature control or wood fermentations. Generally, in white wines, the macerations are inexistent or its duration rarely surpasses 24 hours.
Orange wines are often fermented in concrete tanks. In Georgia, for example, the wines are stores in concrete vases, called Kvevri. Closed and sealed by beeswax, they are then embed, following the old method of conserving wine.
What is its taste?
They normally present strong colours, like golden yellow or orange. On the palate, the aromatic profile shows aromas of peaches, for example. They are very complex wines, with bold tannins and great acidity.
This type of wine is one of the most interesting in the world, and is having a magical expansion, with some having already a culture status.
Cheers!
