Barrels date from the Celts, when wine was transported in wooden casks. Nowadays, barrels are used to store wine for variable periods, depending on what kind of wine we want to produce. During that time, flavors evolve and wines get refined. The end result will depend on a lot of factors – and here are a few of them:

  • wood quality (usually oak);
  • burn process (which contributes to the smoky flavor present in some wines);
  • temperature and humidity of the environment;
  • capacity (most common: 225L);
  • age.

Remember that sometimes we’re just looking for a fresh and light wine (like aromatic ones as aperitif) and not for that extra-woody richness. Wood is truly important, yet not mandatory; drinking wine with pleasure – that is mandatory.

Cheers!
