On May 4th, the Baga Friends pay tribute to the region’s queen grape variety.

On the first Saturday of May, the seven producers who make up the Baga Friends – Luís Pato, Filipa Pato, Quinta das Bágeiras, Quinta da Vacariça, Quinta de Baixo – Niepoort, Sidónio de Sousa, and Vadio – open their doors to showcase the legacy of the Baga grape.

Visitors will have the opportunity to freely roam the cellars between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, without the need for reservations, and enjoy the different offerings from each producer. Wine tastings and pairings with traditional snacks from the region are some of the planned activities, along with the presentation of new wines and vintages, as well as older wines, some of which are sold out or no longer distributed.

“Here, each one works with Baga in their own way, with identity and their own approach. The secret of our success is precisely this: to reveal that it is through the sum of all parts that we can reveal the excellence of this grape variety worldwide,” says Paulo Sousa, winemaker at Sidónio de Sousa.

In the evening, the group of producers will host a Baga pairing dinner with a menu from the traditional restaurant Rei dos Leitões, the event’s partner.

In Bairrada, this grape variety occupies a large part of the vineyards, playing a fundamental role in the region’s winemaking history.

“The grape variety is definitely in vogue, and those who used to criticize Baga years ago now think it’s fantastic. This reflects the work of the Baga Friends,” assures Luís Pato.

Vinha joins the celebration with the Baga Friends 2015 red wine. A unique blend made from seven Baga grapes from different terroirs. It is a dry wine, medium-bodied, with good freshness and present but very soft tannins. Still very young, it is already an elegant wine, with a very persistent finish. A beautiful example of a Baga red wine with a rating of 4.4/5 on Vivino.
